It feels like yesterday but it has been many years. It was a period in my life that changed me forever, in a good way. It was the time when my hubby and I put all our stuff in storage, packed a roller-bag with camera and dive gear and headed out to see the world. We were bitten by the urge to experience and to gather arm-chair memories and it carried us through 14 countries and uncounted cities.
We had no fixed travel plan so if we liked where we were staying we’d hang out a little longer. There were a few places that we got ‘stuck’ in for a month or more, ‘stuck’ because we loved it and really wanted to settle in a little deeper. Places like Malacca, Malaysia, Rio de Janier, Brazil, Varkala, India, the island of Bali, Indonesia and Bangkok (Bangkok twice!)
I learned to speak spanish in South America, saw the Taj Mahal and the Golden Temple. I stood over the equator with one foot in the nothern hemisphere and one in the south. I saw the Southern Cross. We experience monkeys and fireflies and slept with just a sheet instead of a quilt. We rode scooters into the mountains of Laos and met bare-breasted women gathering bamboo shoots for dinner.
Our lives were touched by SO many people and places. We learned that we needed to ask the right questions in order to get proper answers… like ‘does the room have hot water’ should be phrased ‘does the room have hot water from a tap 24 hours a day’ in India and ‘do you have a kitchen’ should be ‘do you have a kitchen with pots and pans and propane to cook with’ in Bolivia. It was a learning curve!
It took me a year to re-adjust to life at home in Canada. It was overwhelming being here… so many choices. In my first week back I remember standing in the grocery store in front of a wall of milk, high fat, low fat, fake fat, cream and skim. I remember purchasing milk, a bag of nuts and some hotdogs (funny what you crave after being away!) and the bill coming to more than $40! That was a week’s budget in South America. I couldn’t handle the thought of being here….but here I am!
When I migrated my website last fall I ended up losing more than 1000 images from my old site and I am pleased to say that they will start to re-appear here over the next little while. We’re also planning another adventure in February so you’ll see some fresh stuff too! I put the Travel Gallery under the Fine Art Gallery because there are some that I’ve had printed and look amazing and some that are available stock and as always, it’s free to look and I’ll be sharing stories in my blog so if you are interested… stay tuned.
If you have any questions about printing or licensing the images please contact me!
